Australia’s leading sexual and reproductive healthcare provider, Marie Stopes International, today announced the opening of a new sexual and reproductive healthcare centre in Newcastle.

“Our aim is to bring a quality of care, accessibility and consistency in providing sexual health and pregnancy choices to all Australians - and by expanding our current service offering to include regional NSW we are another step closer to meeting this aim,” said Jill Michelson, National Clinical Advisor for Marie Stopes International.
The centre will offer family planning consultations and contraceptive advice and insertions, STI testing and medical abortion up to 9 weeks gestation. Vasectomies will be added in the near future.

“The opening of the centre has created a welcomed service for the local community, offering greater access to high quality services.

“We found that a number of women were travelling from Newcastle and the surrounding areas to our clinics in Sydney, so it really made sense for us to provide those services for them closer to their home,” Ms Michelson said.

To celebrate both the opening of the centre and National Condom Day (Sunday 14 February), the Marie Stopes ‘Life Savers’ will be heading down to the Hunter Street Mall on Friday 12 February at 12pm to hand out condoms and sexual health information. They will then be appearing at the Queens Brewery Wharf between 5pm and 7pm.

Marie Stopes International now has 6 centres located in New South Wales (Fairfield, Homebush, Kingswood, Sydney CBD and Westmead) in addition to centres in ACT, VIC, QLD and WA.
